As someone who was there at the beginning of Amnesty International - I was secretary and translator to Bertrand Russell who sent hundreds of letters to governments all over the world trying to stop real injustices - I am appalled at the degeneration of this once-dignified organisation.
The prime rule instilled in me and anyone else handling such letters was to treat the recipients, whatever our own views, with utmost respect.
