Chicago judge to rule on strikers' injunction

Tuesday 18 September 2012

A Chicago judge has called a hearing for tomorrow to rule on the city's request for an injunction ordering its 29,000 striking teachers back to work.

Mayor Rahm Emmanuel had taken the matter to court on Monday after union delegates refused to call off the walkout, saying they didn't trust city and school officials and wanted more details.

But the court ruling may be pre-empted by an imminent meeting in which Chicago teachers are expected to vote whether to end the seven-day strike that has kept 350,000 Chicago students out of class.

Teaching unions are seeking a settlement including pay rises and concessions on teacher evaluations and job security.

No excuse for drone killings

Foreign Minister Alistair Burt's admission that the Cameron government has "supported" a survey of attitudes to US drone strikes in Pakistan's tribal areas amounts to a tacit admission of British involvement.
