Masked raiders made off with a £500,000 haul of luxury watches in a "brazen robbery" in front of stunned city centre shoppers, Greater Manchester Police said today.
The trio struck at Selfridges in Manchester while the store was open and busy at around 7.20pm on Wednesday evening.
They walked into the premises in Exchange Square wearing high-visibility jackets and trousers then smashed display cabinets with an axe and crowbars, stealing 100 posh watches before escaping in a black Mercedes Benz driven by a fourth man.
Detective Constable Adam Cronshaw said: "It was clearly well planned."
A government guided by common sense would respond to news that publicly owned Royal Mail has increased profits to £403 million by scrapping plans to flog off the service.
