Luddites to debate new technology

Thursday 27 September 2012

Organisers of events celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Luddite uprisings are to launch a series of events on the politics of new technology.

The Luddite rebellion swept the north of England from 1811-13 with textile workers smashing the new machines which were pushing down their wages and throwing them out of work.

Luddites 200 - which has organised events commemorating the uprising - is joining forces with Corporate Watch, Scientists for Global Responsibility and Eco-labs for a three-day conference in Yorkshire from June 13 to 16 next year.

Other events surrounding the Luddite celebrations include a commemoration on January 19 for the 17 Luddites hanged in York 200 years before.

And on November 18 2012 there will be a talk and celebration at the People's History Museum in Manchester from 2pm to 5pm with music, poetry and artwork.
