Was Spike Milligan there at Battle of Cable Street?

Sunday 30 September 2012

I have just finished reading a well-researched biography of Spike Milligan.

I always knew that he was an occasional contributer to the Morning Star Fighting Fund and a CND supporter who caused uproar by leaving a wreath of white poppies at a war memorial on Remembrance Sunday, but it suggests he was also allegedly present at the 1936 Battle of Cable Street when he was a member of the Young Communist League.

Can anyone shed some light on this, as he was always someone who has made me laugh whether it was his silly verse for kids or calling Prince Charles a "grovelling little bastard!" in 1994.
