Gay rights campaigners staged a rowdy demonstration outside Birmingham Town Hall today during a Tory Party fringe event on same-sex marriage.
The event Gay Marriage: Is the party alienating its base? featured speakers including Ann Widdecombe and former Archbishop of Canterbury Lord Carey, who are both adamantly opposed to same-sex marriage.
The raucous protest saw activists chant: "Tory scum out of Brum" and "2,4,6,8 We don't want your Tory hate."
The issue has proved hugely divisive for the Tories. Prime Minister David Cameron has said he is in favour of the introduction of same-sex marriages.
But a survey of constituency party chairmen published this weekend found that seven out of 10 wanted Mr Cameron to abandon his promise to change the law during this Parliament.
Fire Minister Brandon Lewis probably had a fair idea what Sir Ken Knight would deliver when he asked him to conduct an "independent" report into fire and rescue services in England.
