'One nation' ignores class

Wednesday 10 October 2012

I am not sure I care for Ed Miliband's 'one nation' notion.

After all that was a term originated by Benjamin Disraeli, a High Tory prime minister, to try and win the working classes over to his side - particularly those few workers who had the vote.

This is still a nation divided by class, property and money.

I am middle class - poor compared to many but rich compared to vastly more people and even more so compared to those in the 'third' or rather underdeveloped world.

We can never be 'one nation' until we practise those most famous of phrases: 'From each according to one's abilities to each according to one's needs.'
