Private Peaceful (12A)

Directed by Pat O'Connor
Thursday 11 October 2012

After the grandiose spectacle of War Horse this adaptation of another of Michael Morpurgo's first world war-based novels pales by comparison in its modest scale and vision.

Set in rural Devon and the killing fields of Flanders, it centres on the sibling rivalry between Tommo (George Mackay) and Charlie Peaceful (Jack O'Connell), their unbreakable fraternal bond and their love for the same girl (Alexandra Roach).

Mackay and O'Connell are totally compelling to watch in this performance-driven drama which paints a deeply intense portrait of a rural community and how war tears a society apart.
