Black police officers warned today that elected commissioners could sideline minority groups even further.
National Black Police Officers Association president Charles Crichlow said that he welcomed greater scrutiny of the police but warned that commissioners might end up "speaking to the issues of the people that vote for them.
"I think a lot more should have been done to raise awareness (of the elections) right across the board but particularly in those communities that don't necessarily hold the police in high confidence," he said.
Mr Crichlow added that the prospect of BNP or EDL candidates being elected should "raise the gravest concerns, not just for us but for police leadership, government and for the public most of all."
Fire Minister Brandon Lewis probably had a fair idea what Sir Ken Knight would deliver when he asked him to conduct an "independent" report into fire and rescue services in England.
