North mulls over self-rule plans at Huddersfield talk

Monday 22 October 2012

Notherners are set to gather this week to discuss independence for the region.

The Hannah Mitchell Foundation, named for the radical socialist, wants Yorkshire locals to come and discuss the topic at a talk by its general secretary Paul Salevson in Huddersfield on Thursday.

The idea has been given a shot in the arm by the planned referendum for Scottish independence, slated for 2014.

But it's less make-or-break for the north, with Professor Salveson due to mull over the arguments for self-government for Yorkshire, an English parliament and a northern assembly.

  • The event is part of the Colne Valley Festival of Ideas and starts at 1.30pm at the Milnsbridge Baptist Church on October 25.
