Anti-Rangers 'bigot' an unreliable source

Monday 22 October 2012

I was disappointed to read Douglas Beattie (M Star October 20) regurgitating the unfiltered words of Alex Thomson, a man whose blog was described by Tom English of The Scotsman - himself no admirer of Rangers fans - as "hysterical, attention-seeking nonsense."

For example, Douglas mentions Alex Thomson querying why the book Downfall hasn't been reviewed but doesn't mention that the foreword for this book was written by Alex Thomson.

Surely it was also relevant to report Downfall's author being described in a Sun editorial as "tarred with a sickening sectarian brush" for his blog, including such gems as the view Rangers fans are grown from "the sperm of a criminally insane murderer" mated with a "ten thousand pound gorilla."

In terms of Thomson's own intimidation fairy tale, a Strathclyde police source was quoted in the Telegraph saying that "Strathclyde Police found no evidence to support Thomson's complaint. Frankly, it was laughable."

Yes, there are those who indulge in "abusive and threatening behaviour" in the Rangers support, but quoting discredited fantasists to substantiate that does the Star and Douglas Beattie no credit at all.
