Robathan is unfit for a ministerial role at MoD

Thursday 25 October 2012

The over-promotion of Andrew Robathan to the MoD is another of Cameron's unwise and crass decisions.

Possibly the Prime Minister, who has never served, was awestruck.

From "nasty party" the Tories have justifiably become, with recent events, the "toxic party."

The haughty, stiff-necked Robathan lacks compassion. He also has form in disrespecting old soldiers, as he did on October 18 when he called for the fine and justly proud 2nd Battalion. RRF veterans to be thrown out of the Commons public gallery.

In his previous post he held the portfolio for veterans. It soon became apparent that he had a propensity for upsetting them. Witness the Porton Down guinea pigs, the Pacific nuclear test veterans, the Arctic Convoy Medal campaigners, the National Defence Medal campaign and of course the disputes over service pensions and those of divorcees.

He should remember that he is elected to serve the electorate and should not to display such puerile petulance.

He is and remains contemptible. I state this without fear or favour, for I have also served.

The nation deserves better and the minister is rightly again, reduced to obloquy.
