Newcastle 2 West Brom 1: Baggies rue misses as Papiss Cisse seals win for Toon

Romelu Lukaku spurns chances as Alan Pardew's side earn late win
Sunday 28 October 2012

Football: West Brom were found wanting in the dying minutes of a game once again as Sammy Ameobi’s shot deflected in off Papiss Cisse deep into injury time to give Newcastle three points.

Visiting striker Romelu Lukaku crept between Fabricio Coloccini and Davide Santon in the 55th minute to head a goal which looked to have earned the visitors a share of the spoils.

Yet he could have had a hat-trick but was unable to beat Tim Krul when presented with two great chances in the first half. The first came after a Graham Dorrans break and the second just before half-time after a neat Youssouf Mulumbu pass.

The openings came either side of Newcastle’s first goal in the 35th minute, which was thanks to a piece of old school route one. Gareth McAuley was unable to deal with Shola Ameobi’s header following a long punt from Krul and Ba made no mistake to drive the ball past Ben Foster.

Both Cisse and Fabricio Coloccini went close with headers and in the end the home side’s pressure told.

Ben Arfa found Sammy Ameobi and his long-range effort deflected in off fellow sub Cisse.
