Finucane family push for public inquiry into murder

Wednesday 14 November 2012

The family of murdered Belfast solicitor Pat Finucane reiterated their call today for a full public inquiry into his killing.

The call followed the announcement by Northern Ireland Secretary Theresa Villiers this week that the findings of a government-commissioned review would be published in full next month.

Prime Minister David Cameron has admitted there was state collusion in Mr Finucane's murder but refused the family's demand for a public inquiry, instead commissioining the review by Sir Desmond de Silva QC.

The Finucane family have brought a legal challenge over this decision.

Mr Finucane's widow Geraldine said: "The Secretary of State makes much of her government's anxiousness to publish the de Silva report in full, as if this were some sort of guarantee of openness and transparency.

"In reality, it is nothing of the sort."

She insisted the review would not contain "vital information" relating to the murder.

"By the time the report is made public, it will have been sanitised completely, to ensure that the least possible amount of discomfort is caused to the government and the British state," she added.
