Torbay's palm tree of shame
Wednesday 02 January 2013
My favourite local story of 2012 was the news that Torbay's elected mayor had erected a £7,000 pineapple-shaped palm tree while slashing £10 million from the council's budget.
The tree - part of £20,000 roadworks that will be demolished in three years to make way for a new bypass - has had to be wrapped up in a hessian blanket to keep it warm for the winter, which one councillor said made it look like a "giant phallic symbol."
Even Basil Fawlty would have found that difficult to explain to his guests and a scriptwriter would have been hard-pressed to invite the idea.
