Another key aspect of his life was his active involvement within the Labour Party, not only as a leader of TGWU delegations to party conferences but also as a vice-president of the Campaign for Labour Party Democracy (CLPD).
The CLPD, now as then, consists of labour movement members who realise that the internal affairs of the Labour Party are too important to be ignored.
Its 2013 annual general meeting is on February 23. This year is a key year in which to put pressure on the Labour Party leadership both to support progressive trade union policies, such as pensions and rights, and to make early manifesto commitments in areas such as our railways, housing and the NHS.
Conference delegates have already made their views known and we must now insist that the input of Labour Party members and levy-payers is properly and fully respected.
