In the days of European empires colonised peoples were exploited and impoverished. Although extreme poverty reigned, it didn't stop them fighting to liberate their countries from imperialist domination.
Importantly, they thought of themselves as Congolese, Nigerians etc even though no immediate prospect of self-government existed.
At the same time the imperialists were attacking their own peoples in Europe.
The ruling classes over centuries helped shape England as it is today, but so have the people.
The English language, history, culture, legal system and institutions are unique to us. Who would believe an "internationalist" who fails to defend their own people?
Nationalism and internationalism are two sides of the same coin where true internationalism is the world and has no language.
The right to self-determination for Britain (including England) has been largely removed by the EU.
The Lisbon Treaty is the EU constitution, an EU high representative for foreign affairs is in place and there are proposals to set up further EU battle groups as part of a European army for the "resource wars of the 21st century." This is the joint new imperialism.
Lisbon also specifies that national parliaments must ensure the EU functions - do our votes count any more? This includes the EU-imposed cuts policy which has already decimated Greece and introduced massive cutbacks in Ireland, Portugal, Spain and Italy. Britain too is subject to these common EU austerity policies.
All establishment political parties including Labour are pro-EU.
To regain the right to self-determination Britain must leave the EU and end this unhealthy alliance.
