Tory's remark on food banks was shameful

Wednesday 09 January 2013

I was disgusted by the recent comments of York Councillor Chris Steward, who claimed that there was no absolute poverty in Britain and that food banks would only allow recipients to buy more alcohol and cigarettes.

While the argument exists that the government should be providing for the poor - therefore rendering food banks redundant - this isn't going to happen while the Tory chumps are still in power.

Cllr Steward should be ashamed of his comments. The only good that comes of this is that he has demonstrated, as if we needed more examples, just how out of touch many Tory politicians are both locally and nationally.

This demonising of the "poor" and unemployed as lazy and undeserving has to stop.
