Lawyers take to the streets

Thursday 10 January 2013

Lawyers took to the streets in Colombo today for a rally condemning the government's move to impeach Chief Justice Shirani Bandranayke.

The demo, labelled on one banner as the "People's walk against the impeachment," took place as a parliamentary debate on the impeachment resolution against Dr Bandaranayake was held.

Protesters outside parliament were joined by members of the JVP party after leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake refused to join the debate.

"We did not accept the impeachment since the beginning and the courts also decided it was illegal," he said, adding that if they participated in the debate they would be disregarding the court ruling.

A government guided by common sense would respond to news that publicly owned Royal Mail has increased profits to £403 million by scrapping plans to flog off the service.
