Official Tube book ignores role of unions

Saturday 12 January 2013

I am a former London Underground worker.

For 20 years I was an engineer in the Acton Works heavy repair shop (long since closed and the few remaining jobs outsourced).

For much of that time I was a shop steward and well remember the craft pride that we all took in being part of the oldest and, at one time, the best underground network in the world.

Imagine my disgust, though maybe not surprise, when I was told at my union branch meeting this week that the very weighty 150-year glossy history put out by the company and given free to all current employees, made no significant mention of the trade unions nor acknowledged the input of their members into the building, maintenance, care and running of the service.
