Bosses halt sackings as staff prepare for action

Sunday 13 January 2013

A whopping 90 per cent of health service staff battling redundancies at an NHS trust have voted to take industrial action, it was disclosed today.

Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust handed 700 jobs to privateer health firm Sodexo on December 1.

The company declared almost 100 redundancies among staff, including cleaners, porters, housekeepers and catering staff.

The workers, members of the GMB union, voted to ballot on industrial action. However the company, which had already agreed to reduce the number of redundancies under pressure from staff and the union, backed down and met union representatives last week, claiming it would re-examine the redundancies.

Action is being suspended pending further talks between Sodexo and the GMB.

The company has also surrendered in a row over unpaid wages and will compensate staff with extra holidays.
