Let's see if the Lib Dems have the guts to walk away

EmailIt will be interesting to see if the minor Liberal Democrat rebellion against the government's plans to cut benefits on January 8 leads anywhere.
It is after all the 70th anniversary of the split in the Liberal Party which saw some Liberal MPs walk out of McDonald's national government.
That act turned out to be the salvation of the party.
The rump National Liberals who carried on in government became indistinguishable from the Tories and by the early 1960s had entirely disappeared into that party.
