Big society con clear in Kensington

Thursday 24 January 2013

David Cameron's big society is dead, claim leading charities (The Times January 7) - if it ever existed in the first place.

Under Margaret Thatcher we were told there was no society and she tried to prove this by attacking the miners and their communities.

Cameron calls for people to volunteer but volunteers need organisations to operate in and they need funding and they are not getting it. Cameron's call for volunters is a big con.

He recently resided in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, which is one of the richest boroughs in the country and has about £171 million in reserves.

In the recent period it has turned one old people's home into a car park and closed the Epics centre for senior citizens.

While local charities are starved for funds money is wasted on grandiose schemes like making Exhibition Road a shared space with cars, much opposed by disability groups and many residents.

The truth is this government's policies are an attack on the people and the big society a smokescreen for what is really happening in our communities.
