South Korea launches first satellite

EmailTensions on the Korean Peninsula showed no signs of abating today as South Korea launched its first satellite from its own soil.
South Korea already has satellites in space launched from Japan, Russia and the US. Two previous launches in 2009 and 2010 failed due to technical problems.
The first stage of the rocket was designed and built by Russians. By contrast, North Korea's rocket - condemned as a cover for banned missile tests by the West - was independently built.
US scientists have said the North's satellite does not appear to be working, but Pyongyang insists it is.
