Activists called for a mass protest in every town in the country as Derby City Council voted to slash its budget because of government cuts.
Just before the crucial vote members of the council's ruling Labour group joined protesters outside council offices in solidarity over the unfairness of the decision.
Alongside Labour councillors - under threat of removal if they didn't slash the budget - were Indian Workers Association reps, local community activists, People's Charter, Derbyshire Carers and the Communist Party.
People's Charter spokesman Bill Greenshields only a mass movement of ordinary people in every town and city could deliver the alternative.
Official inflation figures understate the real extent of rising costs, but even the government's own CPI scheme lays bare the ongoing misery for working people and those dependent on benefits.
