Waiting For Something To Happen (Bella Union)
Tuesday 05 February 2013

VF have degothed, emerging as a pulsating jangle-pop band par excellence.

That at least is the suggestion one could draw from current single Teenage, a beautifully simple tale of formative love and companionship that doesn't appear to end with anyone dying.

But, as with life, it's not quite that simple. This is an album of underlying melancholia, with relationships falling away and youth coming to an end. And there is a beautiful song called Bury Me Alive, so maybe we shouldn't confiscate their goth cards just yet.

Album highlights include the dream-pop classic My Heart Beats, the early 90s New Order beat that If You Still Want Me gradually settles into and the beautiful, driving album opener Tell Me.

Lyrical directness, vocals, harmonies all are here. There's no frippery and it's all the better for it.

Album of the year contender already.
