London's Fire Authority told Mayor Boris Johnson today to stuff his plans to close 12 fire stations, ditch 18 engines and make 520 firefighters redundant.
Mr Johnson would have to take the authority to court if he wants to axe the life-savers.
He sparked the dispute after ordering the authority to hold a public consultation on cuts that it disagreed with.
But after a three-hour debate the authority said it wouldn't do it.
Fire Brigades Union regional secretary Paul Embery said: "Authority members did the right thing, and we applaud their stance."
He said opposition to the cuts was "growing by the day," with even Tory councils coming out against them.
