I was at a Labour history meeting recently where a comrade quite rightly said that we on the left had not understood the underlying philosophy of what became known as Thatcherism, referring to the unsuccessful campaign to save the Consett steelworks in 1980.
That may have been true back in 1980, but we have had 35 years to frame a response and sometimes it feels like we are still floundering.
Never has a more reasoned alternative to the brutality of the neoliberal ideology been needed. This article is a start but we need to get a move on before David Cameron and his Bullingdon chums destroy the last remnants of the welfare state that my parents' generation built up.
The time for factionalism and infighting has long gone, no matter what side of the left-wing political argument we may be on.
