England women out of World Cup after surprise Windies win

Half-centuries from Edwards and Sarah Taylor helped England post an imposing 266 for six in their final Super Sixes match and although Amy Satterthwaite smashed a century for New Zealand, they fell short of their target on 251 for nine.

But the victory was immaterial as West Indies' surprise win over Australia earlier in the day saw them join the Southern Stars in this weekend's final.

England will face the White Ferns again in Friday's third place play-off and Edwards said: "I'm very proud of the way we've ended this match, but obviously bitterly disappointed in the grander scheme of things.

"It's our own fault. Inconsistency at the front of the tournament has cost us and we're probably playing our best cricket now."

Wicketkeeper Taylor rode her luck and could have suffered a fourth successive duck but Lucy Doolan spilled a straightforward catch on the boundary.

Taylor went on to hit a quickfire 88. Satterthwaite and Suzie Bates (79) took New Zealand to 145 for one amid some woeful England fielding.

But the White Ferns collapsed late on in the face of Jenny Gunn and Holly Colvin's bowling.

In the earlier match, Australia had briefly offered England hope when they reached 130 for four by the 38th over in pursuit of 165, but three wickets fell for just one run and late run-outs saw them end eight runs short.

Deandra Dottin hit 60 after the West Indies slumped to 59 for five, while left-armer Shanel Daley was the pick of the Windies attack with three for 22 from 9.2 overs.
