Child killer found dead behind bars

Child killer Subhan Anwar is suspected to have been murdered by fellow inmates, the Prison Service said today.

Anwar was jailed for a minimum 23 years in 2009 for murdering his partner's two-year-old daughter Sanam Navsarka, who suffered 107 injuries at his hands.

Two prisoners are being held by police on suspicion of murder after his body was found in a cell at Long Lartin prison in Worcestershire.

MoD confirms RAF avalanche deaths

Two of the three people who died after an avalanche in the Scottish Highlands were RAF personnel, the Ministry of Defence confirmed today.

The three were airlifted from the Chalamain Gap area of the Cairngorms to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary shortly after 12.30pm on Thursday.

A man and a woman died on Thursday night and another man died in the early hours of today, Northern Constabulary said.

Labour wins SNP seat in by-election

Scottish Labour has taken overall control of South Lanarkshire Council after winning an SNP seat in a by-election on Thursday night.

Labour's Gerard Killen won in the Rutherglen South ward just outside Glasgow, with the Lib Dems second and the SNP third.

The 0.5 per cent swing from Labour to SNP is small comfort to the nationalists, who saw their share of the vote fall as it has in all three council contests since last year's independence referendum agreement.
