The government cannot ignore support for reintroducing daily inspections of meat cutting and processing plants, Unison said today.
The union's head of local government Heather Wakefield made the call after the European Working Community for Food Inspection and Consumer Protection called for the immediate reinstatement of independent daily inspections in all meat cutting and processing plants that apply the European health mark to meat.
"It is time for the government and the EU to respond to the growing demand to increase our meat inspection regime in order to prove to the public that they are serious about this crisis, and that the profits of private industry do not come before the health of the people," she said.
"We've already seen a supermarket chief blame councils, hospitals and schools for this crisis. The government must act now and show that they are serious about the safety of our food."
