Campaigners to mark Manning milestone

Wednesday 20 February 2013

Peace campaigners are to gather at a United States military base in Yorkshire on Saturday to mark the 1,000th day in captivity of US army whistleblower Bradley Manning.

Private Manning leaked hundreds of thousands of classified military documents and films through the WikiLeaks website, including footage of civilians in Iraq being attacked from a US helicopter gunship.

Pte Manning was arrested and has been held in the US without trial ever since.

Peace campaigners will gather at the main gates of Menwith Hill, the United States' electronic intelligence-gathering base in North Yorkshire, from 11am.

The protest has been organised by the Yorkshire-based Campaign for Accountability of American Bases (CAAB).

CAAB joint co-ordinator Lindis Percy said: "On February 23 Bradley Manning will have been detained without trial for a staggering 1,000 days. We intend to mark this shocking day."
