Scottish Socialist Party sees no role for monarchy
Thursday 21 February 2013
I am more than delighted to set David Earland's mind at rest regarding the Scottish Socialist Party's attitude to the monarchy (M Star February 16).
The Scottish Socialist Party is 101 per cent in favour of a Scottish republic and sees no role whatever for the monarchy after independence.
This stands in sharp contrast to the approach of the SNP who seek to maintain the royalty after a Yes vote.
And of course this view is shared by the occasional socialists in new Labour.
The recently published proposals for a constitution for an independent Scotland provides a forum in which this can be debated and with independence support now at 58 per cent among young voters the monarchy's days are surely numbered.
