Don't fall into mass media's trap

Thursday 21 February 2013

Your news item tells of the reception in Brazil given to Cuban "dissident" Yoani Sanchez (M Star February 20).

The report also refers to Cuba's "communist system."

All official publications from Cuba refer to their system as "socialist." Only dissidents, enemies of that system and naive or confused commentators try to describe Cuba's socio-economic system as "communist."

A quick look at the Oxford English Dictionary explains the difference.

From your report, it does seem that Brazilian people have a sound grasp of the difference, and the true intentions and loyalties of the likes of Ms Sanchez. One wonders why Ms Sanchez is to continue her tour to eight further countries, five of which have policies that are decidedly antipathetic to Cuba.
