Coalition urged to reveal alternative Trident review

Monday 25 February 2013

Former Labour defence secretary Bob Ainsworth called on the coalition today to release the details and costs of the Trident Alternatives Review relating to Britain's nuclear arsenal.

The Coventry North East MP told the Commons: "I've been tabling some parliamentary questions on the alternative Trident review.

"The government are refusing to tell me how much it's costing. They are refusing to tell me what it is actually looking at.

"This is now blatantly the Liberal Democrats writing or researching their manifesto at taxpayers' expense in secret. Will the government release the details of the alternative Trident review?"

Defence Minister Philip Dunne replied: "The agreement within the government, within the coalition programme, to allow the Liberal Democrats to produce their own alternative review was something that was made clear and it is up to the Liberal Democrats to decide as and when they wish to publish the findings of that."
