Girl From The Neck Down (State Records)
Monday 25 February 2013

Someone has spent an unhealthy amount of time listening to the girl groups of the '50s and early '60s like The Supremes, The Chantelles and The Ronettes.

The guilty party is songwriter Glenn Prangnell of band Groovy Uncle who has collaborated with Cardiff-based Suzi Chunk to produce this warm pastiche - but let it be said not a parody - of this bygone era.

Many of the songs, like Wish Away The Moon and I Can't Stop The Rain, could easily have been plucked from an earlier time.

But there's a bite and humour to some of the tracks, such as the bizarre opener Got Any Mantras and Probably Normal.

Chunk has a smoky tinge to her voice that suits the songs and the band clearly had a ball recreating the sound.

Girl From The Neck Down is worth investigation, although it may simply send you back to the original arists.
