Production starts on Arctic Stars

Veterans of the second world war Arctic convoys will begin receiving medals recognising their heroism and bravery "within weeks," the government said today.

Defence Minister Mark Francois said that production of the new Arctic Star will start this week.

A campaign to honour the seamen who kept open vital supply routes to the Soviet Union had previously been rejected on grounds of protocol.

Unions fight NHS pay changes

Unite pledged today to fight changes to the Agenda for Change, which will introduce divisive performance-related pay for more than 1 million staff working in the NHS.

Unite and other health unions rejected plans warning that the changes would slash pay and conditions, further lower staff morale and impact on patient care.
