Neil Rhodes was suspended today after Police and Crime Commissioner Alan Hardwick was "made aware of potential conduct matters."
Mr Hardwick's office added: "Following consultation with the Independent Police Complaints Commission, the matters in question have been referred to them."
Deputy Chief Constable Alec Wood has been promoted to acting chief constable of Lincolnshire Police immediately.
