Atheist director left out 'Saint'

Tuesday 05 March 2013

I was glad to see The Star find space to hail the theatrical rerelease of Il Vangelo Secondo Matteo (M Star March 1).

It is a 1964 masterpiece by director Pier Paolo Pasolini, who made more than his fair share of masterpieces.

But Jeff Sawtell's thoughtful reflection on the ironies of an atheist filming the gospel story was undermined by your perpetuation of the myth that the film's title translates as The Gospel According To Saint Mathew.

Pasolini pointedly left out the "Saint" bit.
