Graeme Swann out of England-New Zealand series

Wednesday 06 March 2013

Cricket: Graeme Swann is hoping a second elbow operation will save his career after he was forced out of the three-Test series against New Zealand today.

The England off-spinner must have surgery to remove floating bone fragments in his bowling arm and has been replaced in the team by Monty Panesar, with James Tredwell called up as cover.

The operation offers his best chance of being fit to face Australia for unprecedented back-to-back home and away Ashes series between this July and January 2014.

"It's a huge year for English cricket and a huge year for me, so if this means taking a more active part in it then it's something I have to do," he said.

The opening day of the first Test at the University Oval was washed out today.
