Falling public sector employment is a "tragedy" that will damage both local economies and communities, TUC general secretary Frances O'Grady has warned.
Around 5.7 million people across Britain work for public sector bodies such as the NHS, schools and councils but the latest figures reveal there are 128,000 fewer people now employed in the public sector.
The Office for Budget Responsibility has predicted that over a million public sector jobs will go by 2018 and Ms O'Grady said "the private sector is unlikely to be able to create enough jobs to compensate."
Fire Minister Brandon Lewis probably had a fair idea what Sir Ken Knight would deliver when he asked him to conduct an "independent" report into fire and rescue services in England.
