The Incredible Burt Wonderstone

Directed by Don Scardino
Thursday 14 March 2013

Be under no illusions. This is one of those predictable broad-stroke comedies where you see the jokes coming a mile off but you can't help but be entertained by the charismatic comic stars on show.

In it Steve Carell and Steve Buscemi don sequins and big hair as superstar magicians Burt Wonderstone and Anton Marvelton, whose 30-year reign in Las Vegas is jeopardised by the new conjuror on the block Steve Gray, played by Jim Carrey channelling David Blaine.

Gray, known as the "brain rapist," makes Burt and Anton's double act look tired and old as he embarks on making them disappear.

The film pokes fun at the likes of Blaine, Siegfried and Roy and even David Copperfield who makes a cameo appearance.

But it is Carell's remarkable energy and Carrey's outrageous antics that keep you transfixed.

Hugely silly but a lot of fun and the best gag is saved for the very end.
