Labour attacks plans for mutuals to run Fire services

Monday 18 March 2013

Labour challenged the government yesterday over its plans to allow mutuals to run Fire Services, warning that it could lead to "stealth privatisation."

Shadow fire minister Chris Williamson voiced concerns against proposals to support mutualisation of the fire service in parts of Britain and the Fire Brigades Union has spoken out strongly against any proposals it believes would lead to the service being privatised.

Mr Williamson said: "The Fire Minister has said he wants to support mutualisation of front line firefighting services. But all the while he's winking at the private sector who can see the opportunity for whopping profits at public expense.

"Does he want to stick with a model of public emergency services or is he going to betray the public trust and hand over front line firefighting to profit-making corporates?"
