The debate over Scotland's future has given the country an opportunity to consider how human rights can be protected in law, the Scottish Human Rights Commission said yesterday.
The commission published a paper looking at the future of human rights in the context of next year's independence referendum.
It wants all economic, social and cultural rights to be given the same protection as those enshrined in law under the Scotland Act.
Commission chairman Professor Alan Miller said: "People in Scotland are entitled to hear from the campaigns, as well as all Scottish and UK political parties, on how their vision of Scotland's future brings internationally recognised human rights home to people."
A government guided by common sense would respond to news that publicly owned Royal Mail has increased profits to £403 million by scrapping plans to flog off the service.
