West Midlands descends on London

Friday 25 March 2011

Fifty-seven Unison West Midlands coaches will be descending on London tomorrow.

The Birmingham local government branch, which is the largest Unison branch in the country and represents 15,000 workers, have filled 18 coaches and hope to bring thousands of people to the demo.

Assistant branch secretary Caroline Johnson said that most of those on their coaches had not been on a protest before.

She said: "This clearly shows that staff at Birmingham City Council are incredibly angry, hurt and upset at the decimation of Birmingham's services and the hypocritical decision to cut the pay of the council's lowest-paid staff while the chief executive's pay continues to rocket and the council is wasting money on external contractors.

Unison assistant general secretary Roger McKenzie said: "Jobs, quality public services, fairness and greater democracy and accountability - this is what people will be campaigning for on Saturday."

No sense of shame

If Liam Fox, the disgraced former minister forced to resign just four months ago for his inability to distinguish between government responsibilities and personal interests, had any sense of shame, he would maintain a dignified silence.
