Exclusive: Give us minister, says Grey Pride

Sunday 11 September 2011

Over 60,000 people have joined a campaign calling for a dedicated government Minister for Older People, organisers said today.

The campaign, entitled "Grey Pride," is run by older people's housing and care provider Anchor and has received cross-party backing by MPs.

A nationwide petition has been launched calling for a centralised government portfolio that prioritises the needs of older people and ensures that their views and interests receive dedicated attention.

Anchor points out that while those over 60 make up 40 per cent of the electorate there is no government minister dedicated to their well-being.

The charity's chief executive Jane Ashcroft said: "Within the government's equality agenda there is a dedicated minister for women, the disabled and children, but none for older people who represent nearly 25 per cent of the population.

"Anchor's Grey Pride campaign will redress the balance, reclaim growing old as a positive experience and break down the barriers preventing older people leading happy, fulfilling lives."

Over 60 MPs have backed the campaign and signed an early day motion (EDM) calling for a minister to be appointed.

Signatories include Labour MPs Ian Lavery and Steve Rotherham and Green MP Caroline Lucas.

The EDM calls on the house to acknowledge "the huge contribution made to society by people aged over 60 years."

It urges the government to "do more to tackle the social and economic challenges facing older people and to give older people a voice."

Specifically it calls for the co-ordination of services including employment, pensions, housing and health care for the over-60s under a dedicated minister.

The campaign has also received the support of the National Housing Federation and a number of high-profile public figures.

Former newsreader Angela Rippon said: "The collective experience and wisdom of Britain's older generation brings enormous value to our society and it is high time that people of all ages appreciate the role over-60s can play in our workplaces, communities and families.

"I join Anchor in calling on our government to create a dedicated Minister for Older People to give all people in their golden age a champion at the highest level."

Editorial

No sense of shame

If Liam Fox, the disgraced former minister forced to resign just four months ago for his inability to distinguish between government responsibilities and personal interests, had any sense of shame, he would maintain a dignified silence.
