We must fight these cuts to save our society

Tuesday 13 November 2012

Thousands of people dependent upon disability living allowance are suffering at the hands of yet another hard-hearted and incompetent government.

Proposed cuts to benefits and services are depriving the disabled of an independent life and robbing them of the opportunity to contribute to society.

But they are not alone.

The unemployed and underemployed are also facing cuts that will limit their options in making a contribution.

To some, cuts "are necessary for the economy," yet the reality is these cuts will actually cost more financially and have consequences for the well-being of society.

Cuts to benefits will make the disabled more dependent, vulnerable and isolated.

The underemployed will have to find extra work, relegating the notion of family to a poor second and increasing the vulnerability of children.

The unemployed will turn to the "black economy," further undermining the tax base.

Homelessness and crime will increase.

When it comes to the economy we have confused the means and the end.

We prioritise growth and greater profits over the needs of people. We should be creating a sustainable economy that supports the health, equality and opportunities of a well-functioning and compassionate society.

It is therefore ironic that cuts will actually destroy wealth creation by further entrenching inequality and limiting people's options.

So please support the Hardest Hit Campaign (www.hardesthit.org.uk) and No Cuts protests.

There are two outstanding reasons for backing these movements.

One is to show empathy and compassion for the disadvantaged and the other is to have a vibrant, safe and healthy society in which to live.
