We can start helping after troops leave

Monday 19 November 2012

I would like to steal a phrase from the recently returned Paul Flynn and express my "joy and satisfaction" at his call to pull British forces out of Afghanistan.

Our endeavour in Afghanistan has reached a dangerously self-defeating and regressive point.

The word on the ground from various aid groups and other officials present in the country is that our continued presence is only fuelling radicalisation and virulently anti-Western sentiments.

The sooner we pull out and begin providing aid to this country, whose social fabric we have torn apart, the sooner we can begin the gradual process of reconciliation.
