Army chief suspended for M23 rebel links

EmailCongo President Joseph Kabila suspended army chief of staff General Gabriel Amisi today.
The suspension followed the publication of a United Nations report containing allegations that Gen Amisi had been overseeing a criminal network selling government arms to the Rwanda-backed M23 rebels.
Numerous reports by the UN have shown the extent of Rwandan infiltration in the rebel groups based in Congo, as well as in the country's armed forces, but it wasn't until the release of the most recent findings that Congo took action.
A statement released by President Kabila's office said a November 21 UN report had made clear that Gen Amisi's behaviour was contrary to the rules of military behaviour.
"The President of the Republic has decided to suspend him immediately in all his functions, while an investigation is ongoing," the statement said.
