A special message for you, Cameron

In the following period throughout the traumatic development of Thatcherism, The Specials became a symbol for this era, representing the problems of Margaret Thatcher's Britain such as rife unemployment and deindustrialisation.

The Specials through their music became the social conscience of the nation.

A nation socially fragmented as sides were taken by a government and state, which supposedly represented the theory of meritocratic Britain, instead of the reality of a divided nation, divisive and cynical in nature.

And 33 years later a new era of Conservative-led government continues to develop its "plan" for Britain.

Like Thatcher, David Cameron prioritises destruction within his vision for Britain. Thatcher focused on the destruction of Britain's industrial heartlands. For Cameron it's our social and welfare services.

As ordinary people are told to work longer, the public sector is squeezed through regressive pay and bogus pension cuts.

The banks at the heart of this crisis prosper, as this country continues to resemble a bankers' Britain rather than a people's Britain.

Cameron's disastrous trajectory for Britain hammers young people, who struggle to find work or are saddled with extortionate debt, both symptoms of a failing education system.

As a young person in Cameron's Britain, struggling to find work after years at university, the lyrics of 1979 seem all too pertinent.

Just as The Specials sang on the verge of Thatcherism all those years ago, I have a warning for this latest embodiment of this toxic ideology: "Stop your messing around, better think of our future … A message to you Cameron."
